Baidu AI Cloud is set to integrate its Ernie chatbot into Samsung's Galaxy S24 smartphones, enabling real-time translation during calls and other advanced features. Ernie, Baidu's counterpart to OpenAI's ChatGPT, boasts powerful AI capabilities, including understanding, generation, reasoning, and memory. The upgraded Samsung Note Assistant, now incorporating Ernie's capabilities, can translate and summarize content with ease, enhancing user experience.
This move comes as Samsung aims to outpace competitors like Apple by incorporating cutting-edge AI features into its latest Galaxy S24 lineup. Despite Samsung not ranking among the top 5 smartphone vendors in China, the collaboration with Baidu's Ernie adds innovative language translation and content summarization functionalities to Samsung devices.
In 2023, Apple dominated the Chinese smartphone market with a 17.3% market share, followed by Honor, Vivo, Huawei, and Oppo. Baidu's Ernie 4.0, launched in October, is positioned as the most powerful iteration of the Ernie foundation model, claiming capabilities comparable to OpenAI's GPT-4. Baidu reported over 100 million Ernie bot users within four months of its public release, competing with other generative AI platforms in China.
However, Baidu's stock faced challenges at the beginning of the year amid reports that a People's Liberation Army-affiliated organization had tested its AI system on Ernie. Baidu denied collaboration with the institution, emphasizing its commitment to ethical practices. Despite these challenges, IDC predicts that the integration of more AI functions into personal devices, such as smartphones, will continue in 2024, driven by advancements in semiconductor technology.
